Fishing in the Limousin

The Limousin boasts over 8000 lakes and many large rivers. It is therefore no surprise that the area is extremely popular with anglers, including fly fishermen and trophy hunters who are looking for that elusive record breaking carp.

The rivers offer trout, salmon, pike, barbel, zander and carp to name but a few. It is important to ensure that you have a valid "carte de peche" and these can normally be purchased at the local "Tabac". It is possible to purchase a day, week or year licence. If you are caught without a licence or contravening the licence regulations the penalties can be severe and you will almost certainly have your fishing equipment seized. The regions' lakes offer a diverse variety of fishing ranging from the general municipal lakes (commune owned) to the private commercial lakes which are stocked with the serious carp angler in mind. It is possible to fish the municipal lakes by purchasing a day ticket from as little as 2 euros, though the stock is invariably unknown. However they offer a pleasurable days fishing with the odd surprise! The commercial private lakes tend to offer anglers the chance to fish for the entire week , though many do offer day tickets from around 20 euros. A range of options are normally available, from Drive and survive to fully inclusive packages that include transfers, meals and accommodation. Many commercial lakes are classed as "Closed waters" meaning that there is no need for a permis de peche. It is always advisable however, to check with the lake owner before fishing.
